Footwear today is made from a broad range of materials and their combinations. The basic upper materials include leather, poromeric leather, plastic, rubber and textile materials. Every material has its own identifier and specific properties. The differences are given not only by appearance but also by different mechanical-physical properties, lifetime and treatment requirements. The material significantly affects the usable value of the footwear and in many cases also the purpose for which the shoes are to be used. Knowledge of material properties limits the risk of incorrectly selected footwear and assures subsequent consumer satisfaction.
